kevinb Re:clearing with saw - 2008/03/16 20:10 I believe theoretically you are supposed to have gone through a training session and be certified, but its not a big deal if you go out and do some cutting, you just won't be covered by their insurance if you were to hurt yourself with the saw

gregh Re:clearing with saw - 2008/03/16 21:01 ok thanks, I have countless years and hours using a stihl so I'll be safe.I also have a rock cutting saw too if the need ever arises.

kevinb Re:clearing with saw - 2008/03/17 11:17 just let us know on the boards here what you get cleared so we don't waste time on the trail work day on march 30. And thanks for the help!!!

frank Re:clearing with saw - 2008/03/17 15:32 Greg, one thing I would bring up and will probably catch a ration of shit for on this board is what to cut and what to leave. I generally go with if its a recent blow down and it hasn't been built up with some level of care, cut it out.
What I mean by built up correctly is did who ever did it use rock and not sticks? Does it bounce when you go over it? Will riding it as its built require widening the trail? Is the approach and exit equally good in each direction? If you're not sure, take it out. If you don't feel comfortable making the judgment call, I would stick to clearing just about any other trail besides Tussey Mountain trail, as thats the one that going to require the most discretion.
For anyone who disagrees with this check list, realize that on a trail like Tussey Mountain, there is something close to 80% or higher mortality among the oaks, so there is no shortage of "future" dead fall. Just because something has hit the ground doesn't mean its a keeper. By culling the herd yearly, we forestall a massive clearing of the ridge by Forestry as has happened in the past.

gregh Re:clearing with saw - 2008/03/17 16:09 I was waiting for somebody to bring this to my attention,I'm pretty familiar with the ridge(been riding rothrock since 1995) and know what has been left intentionally. The ones i'm planning on moving are the ones that are at my waist level and have no rubber or no sprocket marks on them. There are 4-5 I have my sights on moving..especially the ones that are resting on the large boulders that i had to lift my bike over and climb over myself..(Halfway between filmore and the gasline)I'm not planning to build up any rocks over logs I'lL leave it up to you'all or trailday.I promise I wont make a mess of things.I'm planning on attending trailwork day march 30 to get more educated.

kevinb Re:clearing with saw - 2008/03/17 16:44 sounds like you have the right idea. certainly anything waist high needs to come out. Theres never going to be a true consensus on what should be left vs taken out, so like frank said, I would leave anything old and just use your best judgement and depending on how thick your skin is would depend on if you were to take questionable ones or not.

Death Re:clearing with saw - 2008/03/18 14:51 ...close to 80% or higher mortality among the oaks...

Wow, I had no idea there were immortal oaks up there.

Just take it all out!

Jim, Jim, Jim. That's what the fireroads are for.

frank Re:clearing with saw - 2008/03/18 19:51 Rodney, its immoral oaks, not immortal. You should see the hanky panky that goes on when we aren't looking. Gives a whole new meaning to "if a tree falls in the woods..."

Glover's just mad that I wouldn't rent one of these things for trailwork:

scarcollector Re:clearing with saw - 2008/03/19 08:15 hmmmm, I'll have to look into building one of those for next winter. Could be better than 3.5 hours of shoveling to clear a path around a park. On second thought maybe I could attach the plow to the fork and push it around--better traction.

kevinb Re:clearing with saw - 2008/03/19 09:14 ill tell ya what, a leaf blower attached to the fork would come in handy for the extention, man are those leaves slippery, even when they were dry.
