kevinb 101 trail watch - 2008/06/23 15:15 so howie and I did some riding with rich werts over in bald eagle including little poe trail. there is a big ugly deadfall just below/past the intersection of I believe Hunter trail, its the one that comes over the ridge from Poe Valley state park. it will need a chainsaw and should really come out before the race

frank Re:101 trail watch - 2008/06/24 00:30 Besides the tree down, how was the rest of the trail?

kevinb Re:101 trail watch - 2008/06/24 09:05 the trail was actually in really good shape, maybe a ride with a set of clippers in a couple spots but was very ridable. the road down to it was full of mud puddles but nothing we are gonna do about that.

kevinb Re:101 trail watch - 2008/06/25 11:38 theres 2 down on croyle, i think the one has been there for a bit, about 1/3 way down. theres another prob 2/3 down. both could be gotten with a pack saw i believe

hodog Re:101 trail watch - 2008/07/08 09:00 Croyle is clear. Big log on telephone - needs chainsaw. One at the gasline on lower Sass, can be got with a pack saw.

frank Re:101 trail watch - 2008/07/08 20:23 I cleared Telephone today, but its still kind of in Piss poor shape.

hodog Re:101 trail watch - 2008/07/09 11:04 That's because some yay-whos keep trimming back the top. The trail is exposed and funnels all the water down it. That's my theory anyway...

rode it some time yesterday after you cleared it. nice work and thanks for your effort! quite frankly, it looked to me like the effort of at least several people. now those wheel trap washouts (ok, maybe just for those little 26ers) are filled in and that big ass tree is gone. the 101 traffic should pack things down nicely .

frank Re:101 trail watch - 2008/07/10 00:02 I guess I used the royal "I" a bit, me and my minion Clay Chiles did the work. Clay was the champ with the brush cutter, I just cleared the tree and tried to reshape the gulleys. Should be way more rideable, but I wouldn't call it fixed.
So does this mean your jumping off the deep end and toeing the line on the 26th?

No, the masochistic trait is nonexistant in me. Just looking forward to the 101 helping to rejuvinate telephone since I ride it so much.

The gas line crossing isn’t very nice.

Demon of the Fall Re:101 trail watch - 2008/07/21 08:01 There is a massive pine tree blocking Pine Swamp road. It is so big that you cannot go over or through it. It will take alot of work to clear it.

On Sunday at Whipple Dam, I told a ranger about the downed tree. I told her about the W101 race going through there next weekend. She said she would give the message to forestry to remove the tree.

We crossed Sassafrass on Saturday. I counted 8 pieces of equipment working upslope and downslope of the trail crossing. Very busy area. We were able to walk across the gas line. I don't know what it will be like for the race.
