Demon of the Fall Thunder Mountain - 2007/10/15 10:44 I rode about 8 miles of the 29 mile Thunder Mountain trail system in Elk County yesterday. The total ride was 25 miles because we took some nice dirt roads to get to the trail head. It was sweet singletrack and a very scenic area. It's near Dents Run and Benezette. It can be accessed from the Hicks Run road off of route 120 between St. Marys and Emporium. It is a prime place to see Elk.

princess Re:Thunder Mountain - 2007/10/17 00:01 i've ridden some of the dirt roads in that stretch, both open and closed to vehicles and had a good time. it's a gorgeous area with a lot of potential for scenic flaura and fauna. i'd be interested in any further singletrack excursions you do there.

Demon of the Fall Re:Thunder Mountain - 2007/10/17 10:30 Dave just rode the entire 29 mile loop on Monday. He said it was awesome. There are also alot of hiking trails in this area that intersect the Thunder Mountain loop. He explored some of these, too. There is a really nice network of trails there in the heart of elk country. I might ride some of it again on Sunday.

Demon of the Fall Re:Thunder Mountain - 2007/10/18 08:16 Definitely. We could make Thunder Mountain a Saturday ride and then do Quehanna and/or Parker Dam on Sunday of that weekend. If the weather is nice we could make it a full mountain bike and camping weekend.

Demon of the Fall Re:Thunder Mountain - 2007/10/18 12:59 The best way to view the elk is on a mountain bike. You can cover alot of ground and get deep into the forest where you will see the wild elk. Elk, like most noble creatures, attack road bikes. Especially if the biker is in spandex. Like a bull charging a red cape, an elk is vicious toward a spandex wearing roadie.

We will be there right before the elk get hunted. Elk season is Nov. 5-10.

We can stay at my camp in St. Marys. No spa but there is a really nice spring that is still trickling in this drought and there is a beautiful outhouse.
